Fasting Recipes

as well as some other resources and tips

…a note on the fasting guides
as found on our liturgical calendar…

All days that are not shaded on the calendar are fast-free.

Pink shading indicates fast days, on which the standard is that the faithful abstain from all meat, fish, egg, and dairy products. Absent noted allowances, on these days the faithful would also abstain from oil and alcohol. Shellfish are allowed.

On pink days with a grape symbol, the fast is relaxed to allow wine (alcohol) and oil. A fish symbol means that in addition to wine and oil, fish is also allowed.

Any other special fasting rules are specified on the calendar. There is one day a year, Great and Holy Friday, that is shaded in black. This is because traditionally the faithful abstain from all food and drink on this day of Christ’s death. In practice, many now abstain from food completely and drink a little in the afternoon.

It is important for all to consult their priest regarding what is proper for their personal practice.

Oil-Free Cooking Tip!

Many of the oil recipes can be modified to be oil-free (thereby suitable for all fasting days) by sautéing the aromatics/vegetables in small amounts of vegetable broth.
